Serbia – my home country

There are lot of attractive places that can be visited in Serbia and I would like to point out several places that my wife and I have visited on several occasions. Hopefully, reconstruction and building of infrastructure: roads, railways, ports, airports, hotels, restaurants, more low cost companies will provide that Serbia will be much more closer to all Europeans and to the whole world.
The Sargan Eight – is the most attractive tourist museum railroad in Europe and is mentioned as unique construction masterpiece in the World, among narrow-gauge lines. It is used to connect Belgrade with Sarajevo and Dubrovnik, and it was put into operation on 2nd February 1925. The problem of 300 meters difference in altitude between Mokra Gora and Sargan and the 3,5 kilometres distance was solved in a unique, and the only possible way – with unusual railway line loop in the form of number eight (8).
The Sargan’s Eight, which was used as an example of the solution for the railways on the short distance and great altitude difference had some other peculiarities. The railway station Jatare was used only as a place where two trains had a junction and not a single ticket was ever sold there. This exceptional line 13,5 kilometres long, 22 tunnels have been constructed along the line (the longest one bellow Sargan bearing the name of Alexander the First), 5 bridges (the longest 44,3 meters long on the River Kamesina) and viaducts. The railway line was closed in 1974. In 1999 the railway traffic company started the renovation of this line and its activation for tourist purposes.
A special contribution to the promotion of Mokra Gora was made by our famous film director Emir Kusturica who shot his film “Life is a Miracle” there. Having built an ethno village on the hill of Mecavnik, Emir became a resident of Mokra Gora.
Drven Grad (Wooden Town) presents unique ethno village consisting of wooden buildings, such as so-called cottages of Old-Vlach type, the typical buildings for living on the mountain villages of Tara and Zlatibor mountains.
In the surrounding of Zlatibor Mountain is The Open-Air Ethno Museum “Old Village” at Sirogojno which presents architecture and interior design of buildings, as well as family lifestyle in the mountainous Zlatibor region situated in Southwest Serbia and vast woodland of Dinara area.
Palic
In the proximity of Hungarian border and in the northern part of Vojvodina region is situated Subotica town also renowned by famous tourist settlement Palic which once was a health-spa and nowadays,
Palic is modern little town which offers various pleasers to the visitors. You can choose some of hotels, national or fish restaurants, sport entertainment, ZOO, summer theatre festival, cinema, preserved parks, horse-farm, and lot of other interesting places.
Just several hundred meters from Hungarian border (Kelebia border crossing) is interesting stud-farm Kelebia, great opportunity for horse lovers to stop by and take a ride with a privilege to drive in a coach with horses.
Throughout Vojvodina region which is north part of Serbia a specific landmark is “Salas”. The word “Salas” is derived from the Hungarian word “Szallas” (meaning “accommodation” in Serbian). In western countries Salas is named “ranch” or “farm”; at our country it is a farm-land with a house and barns on it. Nowadays these authentic farm-houses are being restored and revived throughout Vojvodina and bring to us a wave of nostalgia for how great life was in the past.
