United Kingdom - London visited in 2004 and Peterborough visited in 2006 I have been to England on two occasions, first I have visited IT conference in London in 2004 and second business trip to Baker Perkins Company at Peterborough in 2006.
So many things are worth of visit when one is in London but I would like to start with something that two hundred years ago, Dr Samuel Johnson wrote: “When a man is tired of London, he is tired of life, for there is in London all that life can afford”. The best view of London and the river is from the top of British Airways London Eye, one of the main attractions of London in recent years, near the southern end of Westminster Bridge. It takes about half an hour to make a complete turn, which is for everyone plenty of time to see across London in every direction. In converted disused power station, Tate Modern houses the nation’s magnificent collection of modern art. Near by Shakespeare’s Globe Theatre has been reconstructed and it is faithful to original. HMS Belfast is a floating museum opposite the Tower of London. This cruiser opened bombardment of the Normandy coast in World War II. The Tower of London William the Conqueror planned this massive fortress to protect the city and The White Tower dominates the scenery. It has been a royal palace, set of government and also the scene of some of the bloodiest events in long English history. Tower Bridge, London’s most famous bridge, is a miracle of engineering and was designed some 125 years ago (1886-1894). The drawbridges are raised to allow tall ships to pass between its twin towers. The City is the financial power-house of London, every day bankers, brokers, buyers, and traders conduct their daily business within its boundaries. It consists of modern blocks of offices such as the Lloyd’s of London building, and of course the whole area is dominated by the 30 St Mary Axe building. The Monument, a 61-metre high stone column, commemorates the Great Fire of London of 1666 which destroyed over two thirds of the City of London. St Paul’s Cathedral is the spiritual centre of the City. Trafalgar Square Nelson’s Column glorifies Admiral Lord Nelson and his great victories: Battles of St Vincent and the Nile, the Bombardment of Copenhagen and his great naval victory at Trafalgar. Admiralty Arch is the national memorial to Queen Victoria. Buckingham Palace built in 1703 for the Duke of Buckingham and later was bought by King George III. The colourful ceremony of Changing the Guard takes place every morning and in front of the palace is Queen Victoria Memorial. The statue represents the ideals of motherhood, truth, justice, peace and progress. Westminster Civil power is represented by parliament and government based in The House of Parliament and in Whitehall, spiritual power is concentrated in Westminster’s historic Abbey, where nearly every king or queen of England has been crowned for 900 years, and Cathedral. One of the best-known landmarks in the world is the high clock tower, popularly known as Big Ben, but this is actually a name of the bell that strikes the hours. Horse Guards, whose entrance is guarded by two mounted troopers of the Household Cavalry, are so appealing. Baker Street was the home of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s famous Sherlock Holmes and near by Madame Tussaud’s is the home of well-known collection – wax effigies. Hyde Park Democracy gives a free and entertaining display at Speakers’ Corner, near Marble Arch; anyone can stand on a soapbox and express their views, no matter how outrageous. Regent’s Park Around the park are graceful terraces of houses and with rich flora and fauna, of course very noticeable are ducks, pigeons and squirrels. Piccadilly Circus is a major meeting point for sightseers. The Trocadero Centre nearby has shops, restaurants and high-tech entertainment, with a large cinema complex. With this I have barely scratch the surface and many more places are worth of seeing London in and around. Please, feel free to look at my photo album about visit to UK.
